Saturday 6 April - Grampian Police RFC 14 Shetland 59
A convincing victory moved Shetland to the top of the RBS Caledonia Regional League Division 3 North table. The match report can be found here
But what does that mean?
There still seems to be a large element of confusion as to what this all means. In other words 'is the season over?'.
Shetland, in theory, still have 2 home matches to play. But both of these teams have called off a number of times already, so what will the SRU do?
According to the SRU website Kinloss could still overtake Shetland as they have 3 matches still to play in addition to the Shetland fixture.

Sat 16 Feb. - Shetland 86 Inverness Craig Dunain 0
In sport there are times when scores do not tell the whole story, last saturday was one such occasion.
Although at the end of the day ICD would be the first to admit that they were well beaten, much credit should be given to the fact that they had the balls to actually travel to Shetland to fulfill the fixture. It perhaps would have been easy for the bottom team in the league to have called off. But instead they travelled, they played hard, and they enjoyed themselves in the bar afterwards (if truth be told they actually started on the train on friday). At this level of rugby is this not what it is supposed to be all about?
Anyway, the match was played in dire weather. That bad that the ref shortened the second half by some 18 minutes.
Thoughts should also go to Harry Morton, the 17 year old Shetland second rower, who broke his leg during the first half but still managed to hobble off the pitch. He was due to travel to Cern in Switzerland this week to visit the LHC, but a super large magnet and a metal plate in his ankle apparently don't mix :)

Sat 2 Feb. - Shetland 12 Moray 20
A lacklustre start meant that Shetland were beaten at the semi-final stage of the RBS North Regional Bowl by a well organised Moray team.
In the second half Shetland dominated for long periods. But, despite tries from Kristian Fraser and Neil Scott with a conversion from Jon Pulley, the home team fell short.
The Northwards man of the match went to Dhanni Moar.
Saturday 19 Jan. - Shetland 61 Aberdeen Wanderers 2XV 12
On a splendid day for running rugby Shetland moved up into second place in the league with a convincing win over an Aberdeen Wanderers side who belied their lowly league position.

Saturday 5 Jan 2013 - Peterhead 3 v 39 Shetland
Shetland have now progressed to the semi-finals of the RBS North Regional Bowl where they will face Moray RFC in Lerwick on saturday 26th January. Tries from Ed "Rambo" Russell, Maurice Williamson (2), Paul Grant, Jeff Shaw and Iain Nicol, Paul Grant also kicked 3 conversions and a penalty.
Saturday 15 Dec - Shetland v Deeside POSTPONED
We are now due to play Deeside on the 9th of February 2013
Saturday 24th Nov - Shetland 41 Orkney 5
The Shetland rugby team defeated an Orkney XV 41-5 to win the inter-county at Clickimin on Saturday, the first match in the competition for several years.
Centre Maurice Williamson scored the opening two tries, both converted by full back Paul Grant, and the home side never looked back. Flanker Craig Mann went over for try number three but unfortunately on this occasion Grant missed his kick from wide.
Although injuries led to both try scorers having to be replaced Shetland did not slow down and Grant soon added a try of his own. Again he was unable to add the extra two points but Shetland were now 24-0 ahead.
Centre William Coghill had increased the lead further with a try straight from training book when the referee blew for half time, Shetland now leading 29-0.
After the break Coghill grabbed his second touch-down before Orkney themselves got what turned out to be a consolation try, the Shetland players feeling the ball had been grounded short of the line.
Prop Dhanni Moar got the last score for the home side, outrunning the Orkney defence to touch down under the posts. This time Grant made no mistake with his conversion.
The Northwards Man of the Match award was presented to 16-year-old Harry Morton, on his inter-county debut, for his tireless, mature display which belied his inexperience and age.
Saturday 17th November - Shetland 69 Garioch 2XV 7
Shetland moved up to 4th place in the RBS Caledonia Regional league Division 3 North with a comfortable win over the visitors.
A match report will be posted if one is ever received. But for now the league table is:
Saturday 10th November - Shetland 39 Banff 14
Shetland progressed through to the next round of the RBS North Regional Bowl with a fairly straightforward victory over a Banff team lacking a front row, which led to uncontested scrums.
In the next round Shetland have been drawn away to Peterhead. With the match due to be played on saturday 8th December.
Saturday 3rd November - Huntly 13 Shetland 7
Despite leading 7-6 at half-time, through a Kristian Fraser try with conversion from Callum Williamson, Shetland narrowly lost.

No, this is not another story about Mike Skinner.
Chris Paterson visited the isles to take part in Shetland Sports Week, part of the Games for Scotland programme.

Saturday 15/9/2012 - 2012/13 Season Begins
Peterhead 12 - 19 Shetland
Tries from Peter Sidgwick, Stewart Mouat and Maurice Williamson. Paul Grant with 2 conversions.
2012/13 Fixture List
The SRU have announced the fixtures for the 2012/13 season. There are a number of new teams in the RBS Caledonia League Division 3 North, with teams such as Kinloss Eagles, Strathspey and Inverness Craig Dunain making an appearance. So there are now 14 teams in the division, with each team playing each other only once. Shetland is scheduled to play 6 home matches with 7 away. Unfortunately Shetland are only facing these new teams at home, so will not have the pleasure of visiting the night spots of Elgin, Aviemore and Inverness.
Not trying to sound petty, but Shetland fulfilled all their fixtures last season, yet once more, we have a larger number of away matches. Whilst Gordonians failed on 3 occassions to come up to Shetland last season, yet now have more home fixtures - including one against Shetland on 29th September.
The season starts with Peterhead v Shetland on 15/9/2012, with Shetland v Garioch 2XV on 22/9/12. The season finishes with Shetland v Inverness CD on 16/2/13 (wonder if Hoss will be back for that?).

This season’s offer, for the first time, allows the group coordinator and a fellow organiser a FREE ticket as a thank you for bringing groups along to see Scotland play. Children’s tickets start from as little as £5. This information pack can be downloaded here. Groups must be a minimum size of eight children accompanied by two adults.
And Now The Sevens...
Saturday 23rd June was the date for the Shetland MidSummer Sevens, once again kindly sponsored by BP.
Shetland Select won the BP Sullom Voe trophy, not sure who won the Shield, but the Trackeled Trows triumphed in the plate - showing the world that speed and stamina aren't everything - you just need to make sure that you cheat better than the other team! There is a full tournament report knocking about, maybe one day it might make it on to this page.

It's Official - The Season Is Over!
The home match against Gordonians 2nds, rescheduled for 5th May, has apparently now been officially forfeighted. This means that Shetland are awarded a 28-0 victory. So Shetland finished the season in a respectable 3rd place.

A quiet and sophisticated gathering recently took place at Clickimin. When the Statler and Waldorf of the rugby world, Peter Wright and Jim Mason, entertained the audience with tales of flower arranging and pottery.

Saturday 7 April- Shetland 58 v 0 Dyce
Tries from Paul Grant (3), Matthew Nicolson, JR Nicolson, Stewart Mouat, Maurice Williamson (2), Nathan Coote, Brett Haining, plus 4 conversions from Paul Grant. On a rather moist and breezy day Shetland and West Dyce battled out a decent match at Clickimin rugby pitch. The victory leaves Shetland with hopes of finishing third in the league, depending on what happens with the Gordonians match.
Congratulations must go to Dyce who came up with just the 15 players and made a decent showing despite their players being a tad hungover from the night before.
Saturday 24th March - Deeside 38 v 7 Shetland
Danny Farnworth try and Paul Grant conversion.
Sat 3rd March. - Aberdeen Univ. Medics 48 v 10 Shetland
Shetland lost to the newly crowned league champions on the latest of their travels.
Shane Jamieson scored and converted Shetlands only try, with Callum Williamson adding a penalty.
There might be a full match report but that depends on whether sends one to me.

Scotland Star Meets Mike Skinner
Scotland star Richie Gray fulfills one of his lifelong ambitions this weekend when he gets to meet Mike Skinner!
Gray the 6ft 9ins, 19-times capped lock, is in Shetland to announce the appointment of Daniel Meadows as Rugby Development Officer for Shetland.
Gray will support the club development officer and active schools co-ordinators from Shetland Islands Council at fun rugby sessions at Bells Brae primary school, Anderson High School and at Shetland Rugby Club at Clickimin, all on Friday afternoon.
 He will also savour a five-egg omelette at Hay’s Dock Restaurant, cooked by local stalwart of the game Mike Skinner, and be at the Holmsgarth ferry terminal to wave goodbye to the Shetland team, heading away for Saturday’s match against Aberdeen University Medics in the Caledonia Regional League Division 3 NE.

RBS Caledonia Regional league Div 3NE post split fixtures
Sat. 21 Jan. Shetland 5 v 13 Aberdeen Univ. Medics
On a beautiful day to watch rugby indoors on the television, Shetland and the Medics slugged it out through the mud on the Clickimin rugby pitch.
A sizeable crowd watched a match that could easily have been won by either side. Unfortunately for the home side it was two kicks that led to the tries for the Medics. On a day when the wind was a tad gusty, the kicking option was perhaps unwise.
The Shetland forwards battled away all match, consistently gaining ground through some decent rucking. But there appeared to be no real cutting edge in the backs, who at times looked like brass monkeys in search of welders.
seven minutes into the second half Craig Mann rumbled over from close range for his first try for Shetland, after the Shetland forwards had battered away for several drives. The home crowd was expecting more of the same, but Shetland appeared to then lose any real momentum. With a Shetland scrum on the Medics 5 yard line being lost against the head.
At the end of the day the Medics defended well and scored their two tries through bad decision making from the home side. Shetland should look on the positive side as they could quite easily have won this match.
The other two league fixtures were both postponed.
The league has now been split in two, with the top 6 facing each other again and the bottom 6 doing likewise.
The fixtures are the reverse of what has already been played - Shetland has already played Dyce away, so they now only play them at home, etc.
There has already been one change to the initial fixtures - with Dyce now being the last match instead of the first. There will probably be more.
Shetland RFC now have 3 home and 3 away fixtures to play between 14 january and the beginning of April.

As you can see from the above fixtures, Shetland will face 3 away matches in consecutive weekends.
A glance at the Gordonians fixtures show that their 1st XV do have a fixture at the end of march, so I wonder what sort of team they will bring up then?

For the record - Banchory won the SVT Cup, with Inverness the Shield, and the Shetland Chargers the Wooden Spoon. The Murray Anderson trophy, for best Shetland team outside of the Select, went to the Shetland Baa Baas.

2009 BP Shetland MidSummer Sevens weekend
Congratulations to the Arbroath Smokies team who won the BP Shetland Midsummer Rugby Sevens last weekend beating the youngsters of Shetland Select in one of the best finals seen in a long time. Other winners were the Shetland Babarians who defeated the North Zetland Vets to win the Murray Anderson Memorial Trophy, the 'Oros' won the 125 shield beating the Arbroath Vets and in the battle of the Wooden Spoon Delting defeated Shetland Recreational Trust.

Been around the world!
In a moment (in fact several minutes) of madness, I worked out the distance that Shetland RFC has travelled from Lerwick, in league and cup matches, since our probationary season back in 2003/4.
Having fulfilled our away fixtures this season the grand total of miles covered is some 26,093 miles in less than 5 seasons. Which is a couple of thousand more miles than the circumference of the earth round the equator.

Just in case you were wondering!
In a moment of boredom I wondered if Mike Skinners televised figure for "this is the distance we will travel our away matches" was correct.
Mr. Skinner pulled the figure of 5000 miles out of the air, but he underestimated.
The actual distance from Lerwick (according to www.theAA.com) for 9 away matches was 6350 miles.
